We've seen the use of "three times faster charging speed" and "lightning fast", and some people who are new to electric vehicles may not fully understand how electric vehicle charging works. Some electric vehicles can only accept 16 amps of electricity, while other electric vehicles, such as the new Audi e-Tron, can accept up to 40 amps. Therefore, before purchasing a charging device, make sure you understand the car's charging capabilities, or you may not be able to pair the right device with the car's charging and driving needs.

Most electric cars today are equipped with a 120 volt portable EVSE. However, some electric vehicles come standard with portable 2-level units, and this trend seems to be increasing. For example, Tesla offers a 120 volt / 240 volt mobile charger for each car they sell. Therefore, Tesla's owners usually do not enter the market like the portable devices we compare here. Audi will also offer a high-power (40 amp) portable 240-volt EVSE for each e-Tron, so more original equipment manufacturers may begin to follow Tesla models, including the 240-volt EVSE.

If your EV is equipped with a portable 240 volt charger, you may not need another one. In this case, you are more likely to enter the higher amperage wall-mounted device market. As for the charging speed, the charging speed of the 16 amp portable 240 volt EVSE is almost three times that of the 120 volt 12 amp unit claimed by the ad. Before you buy, make sure you know exactly what the charging device for your electric car is, or that you may end up buying a product that is no better than your existing product. Advertising that claims that their products will "charge your car three times faster" doesn't always tell the whole story.
